Island Tower vs. Longhouses: How to Choose a Polynesian DVC Villa
By Kristen Tutas /
May 7, 2025
With the highly anticipated Island Tower at Disney’s Polynesian Villas & Bungalows now open, Disney Vacation Club members have a whole new way to experience the magic of the South Pacific at Walt Disney World. But how does this new tower compare to the original longhouse villas that have been home to DVC stays since 2015?
Whether you’re planning your first trip home or you’re a long-time DVC Member debating your next booking strategy, here’s a side-by-side look at the key differences between these two unique DVC offerings at the Polynesian.

Design & Atmosphere
Island Tower Villas
The Island Tower introduces a modern vertical layout to the Polynesian’s traditionally horizontal sprawl. The design takes inspiration from Polynesian culture, infused with contemporary elegance and large windows, natural wood tones, and vibrant artwork. Expect a sleek, refreshed aesthetic that still pays tribute to the resort’s storytelling roots.
Longhouse Villas
Housed within existing resort buildings, the DVC longhouses (like Tokelau, Moorea, and Pago Pago) reflect the classic charm of the original 1971 Polynesian Resort. The design embraces a mid-century tropical style, offering a more traditional, laid-back island vibe that long-time Members associate with “coming home.”

Room Types
Island Tower Villas
For the first time at the Polynesian, DVC Members will have access to 1-bedroom, 2-bedroom, and 3-bedroom Grand Villas—a long-requested addition for Members who travel with larger groups or prefer separate sleeping quarters. These villas offer full kitchens, in-unit laundry, and plenty of space to spread out in style.
Longhouse Villas
The original Polynesian DVC offering features deluxe studios and overwater Bungalows. The studios are among the largest in the DVC lineup, sleeping up to five with a split-bath layout and kitchenette—perfect for shorter stays or smaller families. The Bungalows deliver a premium experience, with private decks, plunge pools, and unforgettable views of Magic Kingdom fireworks.
Location & Amenities
Island Tower Villas
As a brand-new building, the Island Tower features its own check-in area, gathering spaces, a new restaurant & bar, and tower-exclusive amenities. It’s location provides quick access to the Monorail, transportation and the ceremonial house.
Longhouse Villas
Spread across the lush Polynesian grounds, the longhouses offer a more immersive, resort-style experience, with direct access to the Lava Pool, beach areas, and Great Ceremonial House. Each longhouse has a unique perk—some are closer to the Transportation and Ticket Center (TTC), others steps from the pool or beach paths.

The Member Experience
Island Tower Villas
If you’re excited by fresh inventory, modern design, and want to try something new, the Island Tower is a fantastic option. Larger room types also open up more flexible point strategies for extended family vacations, best friend trips, or special celebrations.
Longhouse Villas
These villas are rich with DVC tradition and appeal to Members who value the nostalgia of walking the same halls they’ve loved for years. With the ability to walk to the TTC and enjoy the classic resort layout, longhouses feel like a true “home away from home” for many seasoned Members.
Where Should You Book?
- Choose Island Tower if you’re looking for brand-new accommodations, spacious villas, and a fresh take on the Polynesian experience.
- Stick with the longhouses if you love the original Polynesian charm, enjoy easy access to the beach area and TTC, and want to feel steeped in classic DVC comfort.
The great thing is owners at Polynesian can book either option, including resale! No matter which you choose, both options offer something special—and they both count as a “Welcome Home” in every sense.
